Die Pastorie: a house for a minister
At 2 Main Street stands Die Pastorie, the parsonage built for the minister of the Dutch Reformed congregation of Riebeek Kasteel.
The church itself was begun in 1855, but money was short, and the congregation could not support a minister of its own for many years. Ds. Johannes Hauman accepted the call in 1880 and was confirmed on 8 April 1881. The same year a modest home was built for him.
In 1977 the Du Toit family of Kloovenburg bought the property from the church. They turned it into the Kloovenburg Guesthouse, adding French and Victorian touches and modern comforts.
It is one of the stops on the village heritage walk, and a good example of how many old buildings in Riebeek have found new lives.
