The Swartland Wine & Olive Route turns forty

This year the Swartland Wine & Olive Route turns forty. It was established in 1986, which makes it one of the earliest organised wine routes in South Africa. At the time the region was largely overlooked: its vineyards were thought suitable mainly for bulk and fortified wine, and its olives were not yet commercially recognised.

A great deal has changed since then. A newer generation of winemakers turned their attention to the Swartland's soils, climate and natural rhythms, and the region became known for dry-farmed heritage vineyards and low-intervention winemaking. Olives are part of that story as well, and the route now carries both in its name.

To mark the anniversary, the route launched Swartland in a Box: limited mixed cases of six bottles, each from a different producer. Four times a year it curates two cases, and once they are sold out the next selection only follows the next quarter. The winter 2026 editions included bottles such as Leeuwenkuil Heritage Syrah, Hofstraat Barbera, Kloovenburg Village Rosé and Wightman & Sons Gloves Off Tinta Barocca, with delivery within South Africa included in the price. Many of these wines are hard to find in shops, so a box is an easy way to taste widely. Check the route's website for the current selection and prices.

If you would rather taste at the source, the same website lists the producers and is a good starting point for planning a few cellar visits. And on Saturday 7 November the Swartland Street Party fills the heart of Riebeek Kasteel, with producers pouring and selling their wines, including rare bottles that are hard to find elsewhere.

Forty years on, the simplest celebration is still the old one: a bottle from down the road, opened in your own outdoor space at Huis Agt as the light goes gold over the valley.
