Winter in the valley: fires and green fields

Most of the valley's rain falls between May and August. Days are mild and bright between showers, nights are cool, and the wheat fields turn green almost overnight.

It is the season for red wine, slow-cooked lamb and fireplaces. The lounge in Goud has a fireplace, and the outdoor braai works just as well on a crisp evening.

Winter is also quieter. Restaurants have tables, tasting rooms have time to talk, and the light is soft enough for photography all day.

Bring a warm jumper and good shoes. Trails can be muddy after rain, so ask locally before heading up the mountain.
