The Berg River
The Berg River runs along the eastern side of the Swartland on its way from the mountains near Franschhoek to the Atlantic at Velddrif. Winemakers credit its valley with channelling cooler air inland on hot afternoons.
In winter it hosts one of South Africa's best-known endurance races, the multi-day Berg River Canoe Marathon, held in July and run since 2018 as a two-person team event.
For visitors, the river is a place for a quiet paddle, birdwatching or a picnic on the bank. Hermon, at the south-east corner of the valley, is the closest village to the water.
