A morning game drive at Elandsberg
Elandsberg Nature Reserve, at Bartholomeus Klip, lies about 20 kilometres south-east of Riebeek Kasteel. It protects renosterveld and fynbos, among the most threatened vegetation in the Western Cape, with more than 850 plant species recorded.
Game drives start early, around seven in the morning, when the animals are most active. Look for eland, bontebok, red hartebeest, zebra and the tiny, endangered geometric tortoise.
Non-guests need to book at least two days in advance, and you can add brunch at the lodge afterwards.
Set an alarm, take a warm layer for the open vehicle, and be back at Huis Agt for a swim by eleven.
